photo time!

I just picked up a Groupon for photos at Target....

We take a lot of photos at home - especially now that we have iPhones! - but it is nice to have photos done "professionally". I am just not willing to spend $$$ on a boutique/private photographer, so all of our photos have been done either by new "photographers" looking to build portfolios on the cheap, or cheap studios (the count is currently 2 new guys - newborn + 1 yr and 1 studio - 6 mo photos at JCPenney).  They're not amazing, but in the long run, one or two hangable photos from every 6 months is sufficient. And in 30 years, will I regret not spending 5-10x as much on "nice" photography? Probably not.

So now the question is, for our belated 18 month photos, what to wear? I think I want to put the girls in these cute checkered dresses (that were a gift from Grammy last summer, but were too big...) but what do we wear? The package includes 3 photos on CD, so I'm hoping to get one good family shot and a couple of the girls on their own.

flying solo

Since we both work and the girls are in daycare, it is relatively rare for one of us to be alone with the girls for a period of time longer than the morning between when I leave for work and they get to school or the evening between when I pick them up and Chris returns from work.  This week, thanks to HFM, we're both getting a couple of days alone. Today is day 3 of the illness and my first with the two all day.  There is a lot of crying.  As it happens, they're doing better today, the rash is fading, and the fever is gone. We made it to 9 am before heading out to Lowes. I would fail as a SAHM.  I'm considering mowing the lawn over nap (if they ever stop crying and go to sleep) so we can go swimming this afternoon (the clover is out of control).

As a related sidebar, the last time I had a baby sick day, I was home with just Quinn (the time before that it was Avery, and happened pretty much the same). Too sick for daycare, too well to sleep all day. We went to BJs, to CVS, and picked up some lunch out.  It is kind of ridiculously easy to run around town with one baby. All carts fit one infant. Only one baby to feed randomly. Only one kid to buckle/unbuckle over and over, to carry in/out of places, etc.  Don't get me wrong - there's a lot of awesome things about two - but every time I go out with one I am reminded how High Order Multiples (HOM) moms must walk on water and why "people" say it is the second baby that is the life changer. (Besides the logistical issues, it is a lot harder to get a sitter for two than one.)

decisions

Inspired by a blogger friend at Our Growing Family, I've put together a list of some of our parenting decisions. I might make this a semi-regular series, as I know there are so many more decisions to come.

1. Our kids are belly sleepers and have been since about 3 months. Sleep is important, especially for parents, and getting 3 hrs of sleep in a row was really important by then.

2. Neither girl takes a pacifier. They haven't since about 6 weeks.

3. We don't use a monitor at night, much less a movement monitor.

4. My amazing wife provides the majority of their food. Breastfeeding didn't click, but pumping did, and I'm so proud she was able to provide for them 100% for 8 months, and still is giving them 80% breastmilk. We buy generic, cheap as I can find, formula for the rest.

5. We vaccinate as the doctor tells us to.

6. We didn't have a full sized swing, and our babies never slept in them at night.

7. Despite having multiples, we are not, by any stretch of the imagination, on a strict feeding or nap schedule.

8. We go out in public ALL the time. We sit in high chairs. We eat off tables. We sit in carts. We don't own a cover for any of these things.

9. The girls have been at a daycare center since 5.5 months. I couldn't be happier with their care and am somewhat more comfortable leaving them there while we work than with their grandmas all day.

10. We make a lot of their baby food, and give them a lot of table food, but we also feed commercial purees when we're out and for meat.

11. We've done Cry It Out. We don't rock to sleep. We do let them fall asleep on the bottle.

12. We medicate babies who wake in the middle of the night these days, under the assumption it is teething pain or illness.

13. We use carriers. And strollers.

14. I have zero guilt about working and putting them in daycare.

15. We don't sanitize, well, anything.

16. We cloth diaper 99% of the time.

17. We don't own an infant tub.
